Medically reviewed by Dr Khizer Hussain Junaidy, MD Pharmacology, Diabetologist & Bariatric Physician, on 23 Oct 2026.
What it is for
Lowers the thyroid hormone when the thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease).
How to take it
Take it as advised, usually once or twice a day.
Common side effects
- Rash, itching.
- Joint pain.
- Altered taste.
Call your doctor if
- Sore throat, fever or mouth ulcers. Stop the tablet and get a blood count the same day, as this can be a sign of low white cells. Restart only if the doctor says so.
- Yellow eyes or skin.
Take care
It can harm an unborn baby, mainly in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Use reliable contraception while taking it. If you plan a pregnancy or become pregnant, tell the doctor at once. Do not stop it on your own; the doctor may change the medicine.
From our clinic: Thyroid tests are checked every 4 to 6 weeks at first.
